Detroit is the largest and most populous city in the state of Michigan. Detroit’s 2017 estimated population had just over 673,000, making it the 23rd-most populous city in the United States. Metro Detroit is home to over four million people, making it the second-largest in Midwest America. Detroit is known for its contributions to music and as a repository for art, design, and architecture.
Detroit also houses several universities, such as Wayne State University. It also has the University of Detroit Mercy, located in Northwest Detroit in the University District.
Detroit is one of 13 metropolitan areas that has teams in the four major professional sports in North America. In fact, all of the teams play within Detroit itself, a distinction shared with only three other U.S. cities. More impressively, Detroit is the only U.S. city to have all four major sports teams play in its downtown district.
